Sexism in Sports
Do you really believe that sexism in sports activities is a big problem in the sports industry? Sexism in sports activities has become a interpersonal problem over the years. Over the history of athletics, female players have fought to gain equal rights with the male athletes. Woman sports possess faced a derogatory attitude toward all their sports. According to Macionis, sexism is defined as " the fact that one sex is innately superior to the other” (Macionis 2010: 332). Another definition of sexism is defined by Mooney, Knox, and Grube, " sexism is the perception that there are innate psychological, behavioral, and/or mental differences between women and men which these variations connote the prevalence of one group and the inferiority of the other” (Mooney et. al 2150: 169). Through history, sports activities have been focused mostly to males. For example , the 1st modern Olympics, held in 1896, which barred women from competition. In respect to Macionis, in the United States, Small League teams in most parts of the country have simply recently permit girls play (Macionis 2010: 19). Historically, the ideas have explained that ladies and women absence the strength to learn sports. Likewise, women's developing interest in sport posed an additional threat to traditional ideologies. Throughout the daily news it will discuss the gender roles of female and male players, the image and perception of female athletes, athletes guarding their identities, who benefits from the inequality, and how sexism has extended through period.
Henslin and Fowler define gender roles since, " the attitudes and behaviors predicted of boys and girls. We attain our gender when the physical appearance matches the expectations of others” (Henslin & Fowler 2010: 282). Macionis talks about the different gender roles more in-depth by proclaiming, " A culture specifies males while ambitious and competitive encourages them to find positions of leadership and play staff sports. Towards the extent that females are defined as deferential and emotional, they are supposed to be supportive helpers and quick to show their feelings” (Macionis 2010: 332). Society expects both males and females to adjust to these gender roles and stereotypes that have been established through the years. In the event the gender best practice rules are broken it is common the fact that athletes will be faced with brands. Labels are socially constructed by culture. Henslin and Fowler define labeling as, " that individuals categorize things- that they set tags about other people or on situations and then take action accordingly” (Henslin & Fowler 2010: 41). For example , if the girl is playing a male dominated sport then she may be defined as a saphic girls, butch, or maybe a just a male in general. Before women have already been expected to not really participate in strength training, sports, and physical activity. Girls are expected not to participate or demonstrate virtually any characteristics which have been defined as becoming masculine. Males are expected to adapt within their gender tasks just as much because women are expected to. Men are generally anticipated to be strong, aggressive, challenging, emotionless, reckless, and not likely to have weak spot. If a guy athlete was involved in a lady dominated sport he would generally be ridiculed by generally other guys for not playing a male dominated sport. Males will be called a sissy, homo, or gay because they are participating in feminine dominated sports. In Masculinity as Homophobia Fear, Disgrace, and Silence in the Development of Gender Identity that states, " Whatever the variations by competition, class, grow older, ethnicity, or sexual alignment, being a gentleman means " not being just like women. ” This notion of anti-femininity lies at the heart of contemporary and historical concepts of male organ, so that masculinity is described more with what one is not rather than who one is” (Kimmel year 1994: 137). In respect to Krane, Choi, Baird, Aimar, and Kauer, " Femininity is known as a socially constructed standard intended for women's presence, demeanor, and values” (Krane et. al 2004:...
